Social Studies Reflection, Melissa

Social Studies Reflection 31.07.2017

In Term 2 we conducted a Human Rights social inquiry on Rights of Freedom in North Korea.

The main causes of the Rights of Freedom being taken from the people of North Korea is because of the current Dictator, Kim Jong Un. The rules that are created for the country are very strict.

The consequences of breaking either of the rules that apply for living in North Korea is punishment. Because there freedom is taken by the strict rules they have, people are often tortured, sent away to work for their punishments, & some people are killed.

Yeomni Park was fortunate enough to escape North Korea with her mother. Her Father unfortunately died on their journey to escape. Her perspective as she spoke about her fear of when she lived in North Korea summarised to a conclusion of an awful country. Things that happen there won’t happen in a normal life of living in a developed country. In her speech about her life she spoke about making a change for the country, She encourages all the people in North Korea to make a change also and stand up for themselves.

I think that the government of North Korea, Kim Jong un for certain are too strict on the people of North Korea. A lot of punishments are given for unnecessary reasons and the North Koreans cannot really do much to stop the government, except to protest for themselves (which most likely leads to killings, etc.) or secretly escape the country. To help the country we can help spread awareness, start fighting campaigns that will help provide stuff for people suffering in North Korea and many other things.

North Korea - Human Rights, Melissa

1. Identify a HUMAN RIGHTS issues that is currently impacting people and places in the    world.
We will conduct a Social Inquiry on the Human Rights issue of No Freedom of Movement. Our case study will focus on the country of North Korea.

2.You must write an introduction, describing the issue, where it is happening and who is affected by it!
Introduction : The Human Rights issue that we will be researching is “ The right to freedom of movement or travel as they wish“  The reason why we have chosen this topic is because we believe that everyone has the right to travel wherever they want freely, without any of the Government’s concern/permission and also without feeling the need to fear because of being rejected, where they could be abused, tortured and even put up for execution. We also believe that everyone should be treated equally and fairly, many parts of North Korea people are treated disrespectfully and are left to starve with no help from the government.

Melissa - Cells, Living & Non-Living things

This term in Science we are learning about Living & Non-living things and Cells. The way cells function, the way they're structured & how they move, where they're located, all of that stuff.

In the cell system of a human, altogether there are 6 cell organelles. A Cell membrane, Cell wall, Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Mitochondria & Vacuole. The structure of most cells are shaped in a Bean form. With curvy outsides, floating around in the liquid of Cytoplasm within the Cell organelle. Cytoplasm is a watery jelly substance that contains chemicals and nutrients inside. The cell organelles are held together by the Cytoplasm which is one of the Cytoplasm's main functions. All cells function a different way and take have different strengths. They lay in all living things, because it takes a big role in keeping us alive.

Living things have 7 characteristics.

  • Movement, every living thing moves. We're either moving ourselves using our brain and mind signals or like plants, are being forced to move by the weather or someone playing around with it.
  • Respiration, Respiration is burning food to obtain energy which we do when we eat.
  • Sensitivity, when we react to the things around us. Just like the 5 senses us humans have.
  • Growth,
  • Reproduction means to create things. Adults create babies & plants create food.
  • Excretion, is the process of waste removal from the body.
  • & Nutrition, When we obtain food in order to grow.
Non-Living things show one or two of these but do not show all.

Transum, By Melissa

This morning for Math we tried out a new website called Transum. It had games about all the different subjects/topics you have in Math. First I tried a game called Addle. It was about Addition. You had to add up the given numbers to get the answer that was already filled in. It wasnt that hard. Hopefully they put more sums in and make it more challenging by putting answers from 500 to 5000. The next game I played was called Car puzzle. I dont really know what it had to do with math but I found it challenging when I got up to level 5.

Heres a link to the Transum website: http://www.transum.org/Go/

Geometry, By Melissa

Last week we were learning/trying to cement the knowledge about geometry into our brains. Our first task was drawing a rectangle and then drawing random straight lines in it. We ended up with all sorts of different shapes. We then chose 2 different colours along with a black colouring pencil. I chose blue and purple. After colouring in all the shapes we had to cut it out and then glue it into our math book. After that we had to cut out some shapes and form a rectangle. Next we got a worksheet of a flat shape. We had to figure out what it made and then cut it out. The first shape I made was a cube. The shape after that was a cone. After cutting out the shapes the rest of the class had to explain the different shapes there are and how many sides, edges, faces and corners they have. Unfortunately I had to leave, but i'm pretty sure I have cemented some of the shapes of geometry.

Expectations for Sports Camp! , By Melissa

Sports Camp 2015

Last year at Sports Camp was fun. There was a lot of encouragement and support. I think that this year I will be in most of the sports.
I'm expecting this year to be a lot of fun, but not as much fun as it was last year because most of my friends won't be coming this year.
I'm expecting us to come 1st and to win more trophies than last year because we’re versing different schools then last year.
I’m hoping that we will be able to go on the water slide.
I'm expecting that we will be in all the sports for the finals, there will be more photos taken , and that there won't be any stealing.
Sports camp to me is like a holiday and anyone that isn't coming they're missing out on a lot of fun.

Core values:
Sportsmanship
Teamwork
Respect
Encouragement
Discipline

Tropical Island, Melissa

Tropical Island

As I burn my feet walking along the hot sand, under the bright sun I could see the waves clashing against a big rock. I could see tall coconut trees swishing through the wind as it drops coconuts onto the sand. As I walk over to get a coconut to hydrate me, I could hear birds chirping in the trees trying to feed their babies some fish. I crack the coconut open and drink the sweet milk inside it under an umbrella I found earlier.

I start staring at the clear water after it finishes a game of tackles with the rocks. The water was calmly moving towards me and I got a small glimpse of the sparkles in the water. I slowly began to fall asleep as the sun made me feel tired. I layed down and began to look at the blue sky thinking that the clouds were candy floss. Then I fell asleep.

Two hours later I woke up just when the sun was going down, stars began to shine and the moon began to show. Just before the time hit 8:00 pm, from a mile away into the ocean I could see a pack of dolphins doing tricks and flips.

After watching amazing entertainment I grabbed a piece of string tied to a hook, and started to fish. I hung the fishing line on a rock and went back to my small hut and created a small fire. While waiting for my fishing line to get a bite I went to look for a stick for my fish to be stabbed through. When I quickly came back I was just in time to get my fishing line and saw a fish bite it. I quickly pulled my string up and cooked the fish that I caught.

The next morning the sun rose and I heated up the leftover fish for breakfast. Then I decided to go for a long bush walk around the Island. I packed a bottle of cold water and a coconut for when I was hungry. Walking through the bushes of this island I left trace marks on the sand for me so I could find my way back to my hut. I saw amazing creatures and found a hammock. As I look down at my watch it was time for me to find my way back to my hut. On my way back the breeze flowing towards me made me feel a bit chilly. So I decided to jog all the way back to my hut.

As I arrived to my hut I saw some birds trying to pick the leftover fish near the fire. I just left the birds and hung my hammock up between two palm trees. I hopped onto the hammock and tried relaxing. A little while later I spotted a small rescue boat. I signaled them and they came towards me asking if I was alright when they were close. I told them I was fine. I then knew straight away I had to leave this tropical island of mine and I had to go home. I slowly packed my stuff onto the boat wondering if I would ever get a chance to come back here. But I had to leave to get back home to my family.

Sitting on the boat leaving this Island I was sad. I had a great time and didn't want to leave so soon. But maybe I guess it was just an amazing experience.

Chemical reactions

This term we have a new topic for writing. We are learning about Chemical reactions. Even though we have just started I already know a lot about chemical reactions. I think this topic is really exciting. This week I learnt that there are chemicals in everything. Putting two things or more together can create a chemical reaction. Such as putting mentos into a diet coke bottle (with coke inside it) can cause the liquid inside the coke to burst out of the bottle and create a little explosion. If you're interested to see what I am talking about, Here is a link to the YouTube video of the soda and mentos explosion.

2014

2014

This year was a Blast! I had fun each term. This year for 2014 I was in room 12. Through out the whole year I made a lot of friends, like A LOT!

In term 1 and 2 we played a lot of sports at the inter schools. We pretty much won most of the competitions. I participated in most of the sports and I had fun.

But term 3 was the most bestest and funnest term out of all the years I've been at this school. We went to SPORTS CAMP! Sports camp was a highlight of the year for me. We spent 1 week at sports camp, located in Totara springs. We played sports the whole
week. When I was at sports camp I played some sports I've never played before. One sport I liked was petanque. Mikayla and I won at this sport. On the last day at sports camp every school that came first won a trophy. Which ever school came runners up got a certificate. Our school won 7 trophies and 6 runner up certificate.

In term 4 we're practicing our class item and culture groups for the end of the year. But as it's slowly getting closer to the end of the year i'm going to miss the year 8 students.

Number Sequences  Walt: learn number sequences

This game was fun and helpful to me because this
game helped me with my decimals. I started with the
easy level and then went to the hard level. I found this
game hard in the start then it became easier for me but I still need a little more practise. I just want to continue with this game until I improve.

Fractions on the number line By Melissa

Mars.png
Walt: Position fractions on the number line

In this game you have to put the fraction onto the number line in the right position. I found this game a bit difficult and easy because they were mostly improper fractions. But then I got the hang of it and the fractions became easier. Next I would like to learn about algebra.

Learning about Fractions by Melissa

Dom and Dick.png
Walt: Play a Fractions game.

This game helps us to work out fraction sums. I found this game easy  because I was on Level 1 and because our teacher already taught us how to do this. In this game you have to make the denominator all the same. Next time I play a game I want it to be a game that teaches us about Algebra and I want to learn more about Geometry.
